Frequently asked questions

Pricing, legality, taxes, corrections and everything else people ask before they buy.

Pricing and payment

How much does a paystub cost?

A single stub is $8.99. If you buy two or more in the same session, every stub is $7.99 — the discount is applied automatically at checkout, with no code to enter.

Is there a subscription or a monthly fee?

No. Stubify charges per document. There is no account minimum, no per-employee fee and nothing recurring on your card.

Do I have to pay before I see the stub?

No. The generator renders the complete stub while you type, and you can switch templates as often as you like. Payment happens only when you download the PDF.

What payment methods do you take?

Major credit and debit cards through our payment processor. Card details go straight to the processor; Stubify never receives or stores a full card number.

Can I get a refund?

If the document is wrong we will correct and re-issue it free. If we cannot make it right, you can request a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Full terms are in the Refund Policy.

Legality and correct use

Is it legal to make my own paystub?

Yes, when the stub records pay that genuinely happened. Employers are the ones who normally issue stubs, and many states require them to; the self-employed routinely document their own income the same way. What is not legal is inventing income, an employer or a job that does not exist in order to obtain credit, housing, benefits or a visa. That is fraud, and it is prohibited by our Acceptable Use Policy.

Can I use a Stubify stub as proof of income?

Lenders, landlords and agencies decide what they accept. A stub that reflects real pay, with figures that match your bank deposits and your tax return, is ordinarily good evidence. Many verifiers also ask for bank statements or a tax transcript, so expect to supply those alongside it.

I am self-employed. Can I still use this?

Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. Enter your business as the employer and yourself as the worker. Bear in mind that a sole proprietor's draw is not wages: self-employment tax works differently from employee FICA, so treat the tax lines as an estimate and speak to your accountant about how to present the figures.

Am I required to give my employees paystubs?

It depends on the state. Federal law requires you to keep accurate wage records but does not itself require a stub. Most states do require one — some in writing, some electronically with an opt-out — while a small number have no requirement at all. Our post on state paystub requirements covers the categories.

Taxes and the numbers

How are the taxes calculated?

Your taxable pay for the period is annualized by the pay frequency, reduced by the standard deduction for your filing status, run through the published federal brackets, reduced by $2,000 per dependent, then divided back down to the period. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to the annual wage base; Medicare is 1.45% with the additional 0.9% above the statutory threshold. State and local tax use the percentage rates you enter.

Why do I have to enter the state tax rate myself?

State systems differ too much to guess: some are flat, some are bracketed, some have city surtaxes, and nine states do not tax wage income at all. Entering the effective rate you actually see on your pay keeps the stub honest. If you are in AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA or WY, leave it at zero.

What if my real withholding was different?

Then use your real figures. Every deduction line is editable, and a stub should always reflect what actually came out of the paycheck rather than a model of it.

Do you handle year-to-date totals?

Yes. Enter your prior year-to-date gross, federal, Social Security, Medicare, state and net figures once, and Stubify adds the current period to each of them on the stub.

Is overtime calculated automatically?

Overtime hours are paid at 1.5× the regular rate. If your arrangement uses double time or a different premium, enter the extra amount on the bonus line instead.

Documents, delivery and support

What do I actually receive?

A letter-size PDF, one stub per page, ready to print or attach to an email. It downloads immediately after checkout and a copy stays available for 12 months.

Can I edit a stub after I have paid?

Yes. Corrections are free — email support or use the chat with your order number and what needs changing, and we re-issue the PDF.

Do I need an account?

No. You need an email address for the receipt and the download link, and nothing more.

Can I add my company logo?

Logo upload is coming. In the meantime the company name is set in a display weight at the top of every template, which reads cleanly on all twelve layouts.

Do you keep my data?

Stub data is stored only so you can re-download for 12 months, and you can ask us to delete it at any time. We never sell personal information. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Do you make W-2s or 1099s?

Not yet — both are in development. Join the waitlist on the Forms page and we will email you once at launch.

Does it work on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The generator and the stub preview reflow for phones and tablets, and the PDF is identical whichever device you build it on.
